Advent - The Coming of Christ
In the Catholic tradition, the four candles of Advent represent hope, peace, joy, and love, each representing a virtue that prepares the heart for the coming of Jesus at Christmas. First Candle (Hope): (Advent Sunday), when we look forward to the Second Coming of Christ. Second Candle (Peace): The second Sunday focuses on the peace that Christ brings to our hearts and the world, echoed in the angel's message at his birth. Third Candle (Joy): Traditionally pink, this candle represents the joy of the approaching Christmas season, often called "Gaudete Sunday". Fourth Candle (Love): This candle signifies God's great love shown through the Incarnation and serves as a reminder to emulate Christ's love in our own lives. The fifth candle is a larger white candle called the Christ Candle. This is lit on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day to represent the arrival of Jesus.
